The history of radio developed from nineteenth-century discoveries in electricity, magnetism, and electromagnetic waves. James Clerk Maxwell predicted electromagnetic radiation, and Heinrich Hertz demonstrated that such waves could be generated and detected experimentally.
During the 1890s and early 1900s, inventors and engineers developed practical wireless telegraphy. Guglielmo Marconi built long-distance systems, while many others contributed antennas, tuning, detectors, transmitters, and theoretical understanding.
Vacuum tubes enabled continuous-wave transmission, amplification, and voice broadcasting. Radio then expanded into maritime communication, military use, public broadcasting, navigation, radar, television, mobile services, and satellite links.
Later developments included transistors, integrated circuits, frequency modulation, digital modulation, cellular networks, software-defined radio, and wireless data systems. Radio history therefore reflects both scientific discoveries and the growth of regulation, infrastructure, broadcasting institutions, and global communications.
