An electronic filter is a circuit or signal-processing system that passes selected frequency components while reducing others. Filters shape signals by changing amplitude and phase as a function of frequency.
Common types include low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, band-stop, and all-pass filters. Their behaviour is described by characteristics such as cutoff frequency, bandwidth, gain, roll-off, resonance, phase response, and group delay.
Analogue filters use resistors, capacitors, inductors, amplifiers, or switched-capacitor circuits. Digital filters process sampled data using algorithms and are commonly classified as finite-impulse-response or infinite-impulse-response systems.
Electronic filters are used in audio equipment, communications, power supplies, sensors, control systems, radio receivers, medical instruments, and data acquisition. Filter design balances selectivity, stability, noise, distortion, delay, computational cost, and component limitations.
