Sound recording is the capture and storage of sound so that it can be reproduced later. A recording system converts acoustic vibrations into a physical, electrical, magnetic, optical, or digital representation.
Early methods inscribed waveforms mechanically onto cylinders or discs. Later systems used microphones, electrical amplification, magnetic tape, optical film soundtracks, and digital sampling.
Digital recording measures a signal at regular intervals and represents its amplitude with numerical values. Sample rate, bit depth, microphone choice, room acoustics, noise, distortion, and dynamic range all affect the result.
Sound recording is used for music, film, broadcasting, speech, research, archives, communication, and field documentation. Modern production often includes multitrack recording, editing, mixing, processing, data compression, metadata, and long-term digital preservation.
