Radio frequency refers to the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum commonly used for wireless communication, broadcasting, radar, navigation, sensing, and related technologies. It covers oscillations from very low frequencies through microwave frequencies.
Radio waves are generated by changing electric currents and can be transmitted and received with antennas. Their propagation depends on frequency, distance, terrain, atmospheric conditions, the ionosphere, and the design of the transmitting and receiving systems.
Different frequency bands are suited to different purposes. Lower frequencies may travel long distances or follow the Earth's surface, while higher frequencies support wider bandwidths but are often more dependent on line-of-sight paths.
Radio spectrum is a limited shared resource, so national and international authorities allocate bands and establish technical rules. Frequency planning aims to reduce harmful interference while supporting broadcasting, mobile communication, satellite services, science, aviation, maritime systems, and public safety.
