FM broadcasting transmits audio by varying the instantaneous frequency of a radio-frequency carrier while keeping its amplitude approximately constant. The receiver converts these frequency changes back into sound.
Frequency modulation is less sensitive than amplitude modulation to many forms of electrical noise and amplitude variation. It can also support a wider audio bandwidth, which generally allows higher-fidelity music reproduction.
Broadcast systems assign stations to separate channels within designated very-high-frequency bands. Stereo transmission commonly combines a sum signal, a difference signal, and a pilot tone so that mono receivers remain compatible.
FM radio became a major broadcast medium during the twentieth century and is used for music, speech, public broadcasting, and local services. Coverage is influenced by transmitter power, antenna height, terrain, interference, and the largely line-of-sight behaviour of VHF signals.
