Direct-sequence spread spectrum is a digital communication technique in which a data signal is multiplied by a faster pseudorandom code before transmission. This spreads the signal's energy across a bandwidth much wider than the minimum required for the original data.
A receiver using the same code correlates the incoming signal and reconstructs the data. Signals using different codes may share the same frequency range with limited mutual interference when the codes are suitably chosen.
The wideband transmission can make the signal more resistant to narrowband interference, multipath fading, deliberate jamming, and some forms of interception. Processing gain describes the improvement obtained by spreading and then despreading the signal.
Direct-sequence methods are used in satellite navigation, wireless networks, military communications, telemetry, and code-division multiple access systems. Their performance depends on code design, synchronisation, bandwidth, power control, and the radio environment.
