Bugging is the covert interception or recording of conversations, sounds, communications, or activity using hidden devices or surveillance methods. An audio bug typically contains a microphone, transmitter, recorder, or connection to another communication system.

Devices may send radio, optical, ultrasonic, wired, or networked signals, or store recordings for later retrieval. Their effectiveness depends on power, concealment, range, acoustic conditions, and resistance to detection.

Counter-surveillance methods include physical inspection, spectrum analysis, nonlinear-junction detection, network monitoring, acoustic testing, and examination of electrical wiring or unusual transmissions.

The legality of bugging varies by jurisdiction and context. Unauthorised interception can violate privacy, communications, employment, evidence, and national-security laws.
