Audio feedback is the self-sustaining loop that occurs when sound from a loudspeaker is picked up by a microphone, amplified, and returned to the loudspeaker. If the loop gain is high enough at a particular frequency, the sound grows into a howl or whistle.
The dominant frequency depends on the microphone and loudspeaker responses, room acoustics, delay, distance, and phase around the loop. Resonant frequencies often become unstable first.
Feedback can be reduced by changing microphone placement, lowering gain, using directional equipment, applying equalisation, introducing delay, or using automatic feedback suppressors.
Although usually unwanted in public-address systems, controlled feedback is used deliberately in electric-guitar performance, experimental music, electronic instruments, and sound-art installations.
