Cold fusion

Cold fusion is the proposed production of nuclear fusion at or near ordinary temperatures, usually in materials containing hydrogen isotopes. It became widely known after a 1989 claim of excess heat during electrolysis using palladium and heavy water.
The original researchers reported heat greater than could be explained chemically and suggested that deuterium nuclei were fusing inside the metal lattice. Expected levels of conventional fusion products were not observed consistently.
Many laboratories attempted replication, but the principal claims were not reproduced reliably under controlled conditions. The reported effects were generally attributed to measurement error, contamination, experimental artefacts, or unrecognised chemical processes.
Cold fusion is not accepted as an established source of nuclear energy. Research continues under terms such as low-energy nuclear reactions, but extraordinary heat or transmutation claims require repeatable evidence and consistent nuclear products.
