An anemometer is an instrument used to measure wind speed or the speed of gas flow. Common designs include cup, propeller, hot-wire, pressure-tube, laser, and ultrasonic instruments.

Cup and propeller anemometers infer speed from the rotation rate of moving parts. Hot-wire instruments measure cooling of a heated element, while ultrasonic devices compare sound-travel times along different paths.

Some instruments also determine wind direction or rapid fluctuations associated with turbulence. Calibration must account for geometry, air density, temperature, response time, and flow disturbance.

Anemometers are used in meteorology, aviation, wind-energy assessment, ventilation, industrial flow measurement, environmental monitoring, and research into atmospheric boundary layers.
