Telecommunication is the transmission of information over distance by electrical, electromagnetic, optical, or acoustic systems. It includes telephony, broadcasting, computer networks, radio, television, fibre-optic links, satellites, and mobile communication.

A communication system normally includes a source, transmitter, channel, receiver, and destination. Information is converted into signals, carried through a medium, and reconstructed at the receiving end.

Signals may be analogue or digital and can be modulated, multiplexed, compressed, encrypted, filtered, and protected with error-correcting codes. Noise, attenuation, interference, delay, bandwidth, and capacity limit performance.

Modern telecommunications combine physical infrastructure with software, protocols, switching, routing, and spectrum management. They support personal communication, commerce, broadcasting, emergency services, scientific observation, transport, cloud computing, and the global internet.
