A triangle wave is a periodic waveform that rises and falls linearly between two limits. It resembles a sequence of connected triangles and is continuous, although its slope changes abruptly at the peaks.
An ideal symmetric triangle wave contains only odd harmonics. Their amplitudes decrease with the square of harmonic number, so the waveform has less high-frequency energy than a square or sawtooth wave.
Triangle waves are generated by integrating square waves or by charging and discharging a capacitor at a nearly constant rate. They are used in oscillators, modulation, test equipment, scanning, and electronic music.
Its relatively weak upper harmonics give it a softer sound than a square wave while remaining brighter than a sine wave. Real circuits introduce curvature, bandwidth limits, and asymmetry.
