Transmission line

A transmission line is a conductor or structure designed to carry high-frequency electrical signals or electromagnetic energy while controlling propagation. Examples include coaxial cables, parallel wires, microstrip, waveguides, and power lines.
When the line length is significant compared with the signal wavelength, voltage and current vary with position and time. The line must then be described by distributed resistance, inductance, capacitance, and conductance.
Its characteristic impedance determines the relationship between travelling voltage and current waves. If the load impedance does not match the line, part of the signal is reflected and standing waves may form.
Transmission-line theory is essential in radio, microwave engineering, high-speed digital electronics, antennas, telecommunications, power systems, and laboratory measurement.
