Krakatoa is a volcanic island group in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra in Indonesia. It is best known for the catastrophic eruption of 1883, one of the most destructive volcanic events in recorded history.

The eruption culminated in enormous explosions and collapse of much of the volcanic island. Pyroclastic flows and tsunamis killed tens of thousands of people around the Sunda Strait.

Pressure waves from the explosions travelled around the world several times and were recorded by barometers at great distances. The sound was heard thousands of kilometres away, making the event important in the history of atmospheric-wave observation.

Volcanic ash and aerosols entered the atmosphere and produced vivid sunsets and temporary global cooling. A new volcanic island, Anak Krakatau, later grew within the caldera and remains active.
