Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, or FTIR, is an analytical technique that measures how a sample absorbs infrared radiation across a range of wavelengths. The resulting spectrum reveals vibrational modes of molecules and solids.
An interferometer combines infrared beams with different path lengths to create an interferogram containing information from many frequencies at once. A Fourier transform converts this signal into an absorption or transmission spectrum.
Molecular bonds absorb characteristic frequency ranges associated with stretching, bending, rotation, lattice vibration, and other motions. These patterns can identify compounds, functional groups, crystal structures, and chemical changes.
FTIR is used in chemistry, geology, pharmaceuticals, polymers, environmental analysis, art conservation, forensics, and materials science. Samples may be measured by transmission, reflection, microscopy, or attenuated total reflectance.
