Soundproofing is the reduction of sound transmission between spaces or from a source to its surroundings. It differs from acoustic treatment, which primarily controls reflections and reverberation within a room.
Effective sound isolation usually combines mass, airtight construction, mechanical separation, and damping. Heavy barriers resist vibration, sealed gaps prevent leaks, and resilient connections reduce the transfer of structure-borne sound.
Double walls, floating floors, suspended ceilings, laminated panels, insulation-filled cavities, acoustic doors, and vibration isolators are common techniques. Low-frequency sound is particularly difficult to contain because long wavelengths and structural vibration penetrate lightweight assemblies.
Performance is measured with ratings based on transmission loss across frequency, but real buildings may perform worse than laboratory tests because sound can travel through ventilation, floors, ceilings, pipes, and adjoining structures.
