Sound is a mechanical disturbance that propagates through a medium as variations in pressure, density, stress, or particle displacement. In gases and liquids it usually travels as a longitudinal wave, while solids can also support transverse waves.
Sound is characterised by frequency, wavelength, amplitude, phase, speed, intensity, and spectrum. The audible range for humans is commonly described as approximately 20 hertz to 20 kilohertz, although sensitivity varies with age, level, and individual hearing.
Sources create sound by vibrating and transferring energy to the surrounding medium. Boundaries and materials cause reflection, refraction, absorption, diffraction, interference, resonance, and reverberation.
The perception of sound involves the ear and nervous system as well as the physical wave. Pitch, loudness, timbre, localisation, and rhythm depend on both acoustic properties and auditory processing.
