Rhythm
Article
Rhythm is the organisation of musical events in time. It includes patterns of duration, onset, accent, silence, pulse, tempo, metre, and grouping.
A regular beat can provide a reference against which notes are placed, but rhythm does not always require an explicitly audible pulse. Metre organises beats into recurring groups, while syncopation shifts emphasis away from expected positions.
Rhythmic systems vary widely among musical traditions. They may use simple or compound metres, additive patterns, polyrhythms, changing metres, cyclic time frameworks, or flexible timing not governed by a regular beat.
Rhythm interacts with melody, harmony, language, dance, movement, and expectation. Human performance also includes expressive timing, in which durations and accents vary slightly rather than following mechanically exact intervals.
