Joshua S. Goldstein is an American scholar of international relations whose work has examined war, long economic waves, global power, gender, and trends in armed conflict. He has taught at the University of Southern California and American University and worked as a political-science researcher at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
In Long Cycles: Prosperity and War in the Modern Age, published in 1988, Goldstein analysed relationships among production, prices, investment, technological innovation, wages, and major wars. He connected these variables with Kondratiev-style long waves.
Goldstein also proposed a longer hegemony cycle of about 150 years. His sequence identified periods dominated by Habsburg Spain, the Netherlands, Britain, and the United States, with major wars and international settlements marking transitions.
His later publications addressed the economic cost of war, gender and warfare, international-relations theory, and the long-term decline of armed conflict. His cyclical interpretations remain part of a broader debate about whether global leadership and warfare follow recurrent structures.
