Very high frequency

Very high frequency, or VHF, is the radio-frequency range from 30 to 300 megahertz. Its corresponding wavelengths extend from about ten metres to one metre.

VHF signals generally propagate by line of sight and can travel somewhat beyond the optical horizon because of atmospheric refraction. Terrain, buildings, vegetation, and atmospheric conditions affect coverage.

The band is used for FM radio, television, air-traffic communication, marine radio, land-mobile services, amateur radio, and some navigation and data systems. Different countries allocate specific sub-bands for these purposes.

VHF antennas are smaller than those for lower frequencies but larger than typical microwave antennas. Sporadic-E, tropospheric ducting, and meteor trails can occasionally carry VHF signals over unusually long distances.
