The sperm whale is the largest toothed whale and possesses the largest brain of any known animal. It is found throughout the world's oceans and is adapted for deep, prolonged dives.

Sperm whales produce extremely powerful broadband clicks using structures in the head. These sounds are used for echolocation, navigation, and communication.

During foraging dives, regular clicks accelerate into rapid sequences called buzzes as whales approach prey. Social groups also exchange patterned click sequences known as codas.

The whales feed mainly on squid and fish, often at great depth where light is absent. Their acoustic behaviour is studied to understand sensory biology, social structure, migration, and the physics of underwater sound.
