Resonance is the increased response of a system when it is driven at or near one of its natural frequencies. At resonance, energy is transferred efficiently from the driving force into the oscillating system.
Mechanical, acoustic, electrical, optical, atomic, and orbital systems can all exhibit resonance. Examples include a pendulum pushed at the right rhythm, a vibrating string, an electrical tuned circuit, and light interacting with atomic energy levels.
The strength and sharpness of resonance depend on damping and coupling. Lightly damped systems have narrow, strong resonance peaks, while strongly damped systems respond over a broader frequency range with lower maximum amplitude.
Resonance can be useful in clocks, filters, musical instruments, antennas, imaging, and spectroscopy. It can also cause damaging vibration in buildings, bridges, machinery, aircraft, and other structures if periodic forcing matches a natural mode.
