Radar is a detection and ranging system that transmits radio waves and analyses echoes reflected from objects. The time delay of the return signal provides distance, while direction is determined by the antenna or signal geometry.
The Doppler shift of the echo can reveal radial velocity. The strength, polarisation, and shape of the return provide information about size, material, orientation, weather particles, or surface structure.
Radar systems operate across different microwave and radio-frequency bands. Pulse radar measures travel time directly, while continuous-wave and frequency-modulated systems use phase or frequency changes.
Applications include aviation, shipping, weather observation, vehicle speed measurement, defence, planetary mapping, remote sensing, ground penetration, and navigation.
