Electromagnetism is the branch of physics concerned with electric charge, electric and magnetic fields, currents, and electromagnetic radiation. It unifies electricity and magnetism as different aspects of a single interaction.
Stationary charges produce electric fields, while moving charges create magnetic fields. Changing electric fields generate magnetic fields, and changing magnetic fields generate electric fields.
Maxwell's equations summarise these relationships and predict electromagnetic waves travelling at the speed of light. This result established light as an electromagnetic phenomenon.
Electromagnetism governs atomic structure, chemical bonding, electronics, motors, generators, communication, optics, and the behaviour of most everyday materials. Quantum electrodynamics provides its quantum-field description.
