Anders Jonas Ångström was a Swedish physicist and one of the founders of spectroscopy. He was born in 1814 and worked primarily at Uppsala University, where he studied heat, magnetism, and the spectra of light.
Ångström made precise measurements of the wavelengths of spectral lines, particularly those in the solar spectrum. His work helped establish that chemical elements could be identified by their characteristic patterns of emitted or absorbed light.
He published a detailed atlas of the solar spectrum and expressed wavelengths in units of one ten-millionth of a millimetre. This unit later became known as the ångström and is equal to 10⁻¹⁰ metre.
The ångström remains widely used for atomic dimensions, crystal spacings, and wavelengths of X-rays and visible or ultraviolet light. Ångström's measurements contributed to the development of astrophysics, atomic physics, and quantitative spectroscopy.
