Aerodynamics is the study of the motion of air and other gases and the forces they exert on bodies. It is a branch of fluid dynamics concerned with pressure, velocity, density, viscosity, and compressibility.
Forces on an object in a flow are commonly divided into lift and drag. Their magnitudes depend on shape, angle, speed, fluid properties, surface condition, and whether the flow is laminar, transitional, or turbulent.
At low speeds, air can often be treated as incompressible. At higher Mach numbers, density changes, shock waves, heating, and wave drag become important.
Aerodynamics is applied to aircraft, vehicles, buildings, wind turbines, sports equipment, ventilation, weather, and animal flight. Experiments, wind tunnels, analytical theory, and computational fluid dynamics are used together.
