Phonetics is the scientific study of speech sounds. It examines how they are produced by the vocal organs, transmitted as acoustic waves, and perceived by listeners.
Articulatory phonetics describes movements of the lungs, larynx, tongue, lips, palate, and other structures. Acoustic phonetics analyses properties such as duration, frequency, formants, intensity, and spectral shape.
Auditory phonetics investigates how the ear and brain process speech. Speech sounds can be represented with systems such as the International Phonetic Alphabet, which provides symbols for many possible human articulations.
Phonetics supports linguistics, language teaching, speech therapy, forensic analysis, singing, telecommunications, and speech technology. It differs from phonology, which focuses more on how sound patterns function within particular languages.
