Loudspeaker

Article

A loudspeaker converts an electrical audio signal into sound. Most conventional loudspeakers use an electromagnetic driver in which a current-carrying voice coil moves within a magnetic field and drives a diaphragm.

The moving diaphragm produces pressure variations in the surrounding air. Its size, mass, stiffness, suspension, enclosure, and motor determine its efficiency, frequency response, distortion, and maximum output.

Because one driver rarely reproduces the full audible range equally well, systems often use separate woofers, midrange drivers, and tweeters. A crossover network directs appropriate frequency bands to each driver.

Loudspeaker design also involves enclosure resonances, directivity, impedance, power handling, room interaction, and listener position. Alternative technologies include electrostatic, planar magnetic, ribbon, horn, piezoelectric, and distributed-mode speakers.
