Acoustics is the branch of physics concerned with mechanical waves in gases, liquids, and solids, including sound, vibration, ultrasound, and infrasound. It studies how these waves are created, transmitted, reflected, absorbed, and detected.
Sound is described using frequency, wavelength, amplitude, phase, speed, intensity, and spectrum. The properties of the medium and surrounding boundaries influence propagation and resonance.
Major areas include architectural, musical, underwater, environmental, biomedical, structural, and psychological acoustics. Applications range from concert halls and loudspeakers to sonar, medical imaging, machinery diagnosis, and noise reduction.
Acoustics also overlaps with signal processing, fluid mechanics, materials science, physiology, and perception. Because sound may be analysed both as a physical wave and as an auditory experience, the field connects measurable vibration with human hearing and interpretation.
