Trade-Weighted Dollar Index
First published: 2006
Brief summary
FRED broad dollar cycle series.
Article
The Nominal Broad US Dollar Index measures the value of the US dollar against a broad group of foreign currencies. It is published by the Federal Reserve Board through the H.10 Foreign Exchange Rates release and distributed through FRED.
The index is trade weighted rather than based on a single bilateral exchange rate. Movements therefore reflect changes in the dollar against many currencies, with each partner receiving a weight related to its importance in US trade.
The series is reported as an index with January 2006 equal to 100 and is not seasonally adjusted. A rise indicates a broad nominal appreciation of the dollar, while a fall indicates depreciation against the weighted currency basket.
Daily, monthly and annual versions are available. The series records changes in the dollar’s external value, but it is not adjusted for inflation and does not directly measure purchasing power, export competitiveness or currency misvaluation.
