FRED Exchange Rates
First published: 1991
Brief summary
FRED category with exchange-rate series.
Article
The FRED exchange-rate category assembles daily and lower-frequency currency series from the Federal Reserve and other official data providers. It includes bilateral spot rates, broad dollar indices and related exchange-rate measures.
The bilateral series are quoted in different conventions depending on the currency. Some show foreign-currency units per US dollar, while others show US dollars per unit of foreign currency, so the units must be checked before comparing movements.
Although the observations are labelled daily, the Federal Reserve’s H.10 daily exchange-rate data have been released in weekly batches since January 2009. FRED therefore updates the database weekly with the daily observations from the preceding week.
The category provides downloadable data, charts, metadata and links to the original releases. The series are suitable for measuring historical exchange-rate changes, but differences in quotation, frequency, holidays and data revisions must be considered.
