Ecology is the scientific study of relationships among organisms and between organisms and their physical environment. It examines how populations, communities, ecosystems, and landscapes are structured and how they change through time.
Ecological processes include competition, predation, mutualism, disease, migration, reproduction, succession, nutrient cycling, decomposition, and energy flow. These processes operate across scales from individual organisms to the biosphere.
Climate and weather influence ecology through temperature, rainfall, light, storms, drought, snow, ocean conditions, and seasonality. Ecological systems can therefore show annual, multi-year, and longer cycles in abundance, productivity, migration, flowering, and disturbance.
Ecologists use observation, experiments, long-term monitoring, remote sensing, genetics, and mathematical models. Their work supports conservation, agriculture, fisheries, restoration, and assessment of environmental change.
