A climate oscillation is a recurring or quasi-recurring variation in the atmosphere-ocean system. Oscillations redistribute heat, moisture, and momentum and can influence weather patterns over large regions.
Examples include the El Niño–Southern Oscillation, North Atlantic Oscillation, Pacific Decadal Oscillation, Indian Ocean Dipole, and Madden–Julian Oscillation. Their periods range from weeks or months to years and decades, and their timing is not perfectly regular.
Climate oscillations arise from interactions among winds, ocean temperatures, pressure patterns, currents, sea ice, and feedbacks within the climate system. They can affect drought, rainfall, storms, marine productivity, temperature, and seasonal forecasting.
Because oscillations overlap with long-term trends and random weather variability, their effects must be separated statistically and physically. Observations, reanalysis datasets, paleoclimate records, and coupled climate models are used to study their behaviour.
