Neurofeedback is a form of biofeedback in which measurements of brain activity are presented to a person in near real time. The feedback is intended to help the person learn to alter selected patterns of neural activity.
Most neurofeedback systems use electroencephalography, although other imaging or physiological methods may also be used. Signals are processed into visual, auditory, or game-like feedback linked to features such as frequency-band power, slow cortical potentials, or activity in selected regions.
Training generally involves repeated sessions in which the feedback changes when the measured signal moves toward a target pattern. The exact learning mechanisms remain under investigation and can include attention, conditioning, expectation, strategy use, and physiological self-regulation.
Neurofeedback has been studied for attention disorders, epilepsy, anxiety, insomnia, pain, rehabilitation, and other conditions. Evidence varies by application, and research must distinguish specific neural-training effects from placebo effects, practice, support, and other influences.
