Feedback occurs when the output of a system is returned as an input that influences the system's subsequent behaviour. Feedback is a general principle used in biology, engineering, economics, climate science, electronics, and many other fields.
Negative feedback counteracts a change and tends to stabilise a variable around a range or set point. Biological examples include regulation of body temperature, blood glucose, hormone levels, and many metabolic pathways.
Positive feedback reinforces an initial change and can rapidly drive a process toward a new state. Examples include blood clotting, parts of childbirth, action-potential generation, and some ecological or climate transitions.
Feedback loops may contain delays, nonlinear responses, thresholds, and interactions with other loops. These features can generate stable regulation, overshoot, oscillation, cycles, amplification, or chaotic behaviour depending on the structure of the system.
