Ecology is the scientific study of relationships among organisms and between organisms and their physical environment. It investigates how living systems are distributed, how they obtain resources, and how populations and communities change over time.
Ecological organisation can be studied at the level of individuals, populations, communities, ecosystems, landscapes, biomes, and the biosphere. Processes include competition, predation, mutualism, disease, migration, succession, nutrient cycling, and energy flow.
Many ecological processes are cyclic or rhythmic. Examples include seasonal breeding, migration, predator-prey oscillations, population cycles, flowering, decomposition, tides, fire regimes, and carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, and water cycles.
Ecology combines field observation, experiments, mathematical models, remote sensing, genetics, chemistry, climatology, and other disciplines. Its findings are central to conservation, agriculture, resource management, restoration, and understanding environmental change.
