Historical dynamics applies mathematical models and quantitative evidence to long-term changes in human societies. The approach associated with Peter Turchin examines how political organisation, population, resources, warfare and collective solidarity interact over extended periods.

The framework treats states and empires as complex systems whose growth and decline may result from feedback among social variables rather than from a single cause. Models are developed as explicit hypotheses that can be compared with historical observations.
