The frequency domain is a way of representing a signal according to its component frequencies rather than how it changes over time or distance. It shows how much of each frequency is present and may also record the phase of each component.
A time-domain waveform can be transformed into a frequency-domain spectrum using methods such as the Fourier transform. The reverse transform reconstructs the waveform from its frequency components.
Frequency-domain analysis makes periodicities, harmonics, resonances, bandwidth, and noise easier to identify. Filters and systems can also be described by how they alter the amplitude and phase of different frequencies.
The method is widely used in acoustics, electronics, communications, control engineering, optics, vibration analysis, astronomy, geophysics, and many forms of time-series research.
