Digital signal processing is the numerical analysis and modification of signals after they have been represented as sequences of sampled values. It is performed by computers, microprocessors, digital signal processors, or specialised hardware.
An analogue signal is converted to digital form by sampling and quantisation. The sampling rate must be high enough to represent the relevant frequencies without aliasing, and an anti-aliasing filter is often used before conversion.
Common operations include filtering, Fourier analysis, correlation, compression, modulation, noise reduction, feature extraction, resampling, and system identification. Algorithms may operate in real time or on stored data.
Digital signal processing is used in audio, images, video, telecommunications, radar, sonar, medical equipment, scientific instruments, control systems, seismology, and machine learning.
