Absorption spectroscopy measures how a substance absorbs electromagnetic radiation as a function of wavelength or frequency. The resulting spectrum shows reductions in transmitted intensity where photons interact with atoms, molecules, or solids.
Absorption occurs when photon energy matches an allowed transition between energy states. Electronic, vibrational, and rotational transitions appear in different regions of the electromagnetic spectrum.
The positions of absorption features help identify substances, while their strengths can be used to estimate concentration through relationships such as the Beer–Lambert law. Line shapes and widths can also reveal temperature, pressure, motion, and interactions.
Absorption spectroscopy is used in chemistry, physics, astronomy, atmospheric science, environmental monitoring, medicine, materials research, and remote sensing.
