Cyclostratigraphy is the branch of stratigraphy concerned with identifying, characterising, correlating and interpreting cyclic variations in the geological record. It is used to improve the resolution of time-stratigraphic frameworks and to relate sedimentary patterns to recurring environmental processes.
Many applications focus on astronomical forcing produced by precession, obliquity and eccentricity. These orbital variations alter the seasonal and latitudinal distribution of solar radiation and can influence climate, sea level, sediment supply, productivity and the preservation of sedimentary facies.
Cyclostratigraphic analysis combines field observations, facies interpretation, geophysical logs, geochemical measurements and numerical methods. Repeated sedimentary units are tested for hierarchical organisation and periodicities that may correspond to known astronomical cycles.
The method can support high-resolution correlation and age estimation when independent biostratigraphic, radiometric or magnetostratigraphic constraints are available. Apparent cyclicity must be evaluated carefully because sedimentation rates vary, records may contain gaps, and non-astronomical processes can also create repeated patterns.
