The boron cycle describes the movement of boron among rocks, soils, oceans, the atmosphere, and living organisms. Boron is a trace element that is essential for plant growth but can become toxic at high concentrations.
Weathering releases boron from minerals into soils, rivers, and groundwater. Rivers transport dissolved boron to the oceans, where it occurs mainly as boric acid and borate ions.
Plants take up boron from soil water and use it in cell-wall structure and development. Boron returns to soil through litter, decomposition, and the weathering of biological material.
Marine sedimentation, evaporation, mineral formation, subduction, volcanism, and uplift complete longer geological pathways. Irrigation, fertilisers, mining, and industrial activity can alter boron concentrations locally.
