Brief summary
BIS triennial survey on FX market structure and liquidity.
Article
The BIS Triennial Central Bank Survey is a global survey of over-the-counter foreign-exchange and interest-rate derivatives markets. The foreign-exchange part has been conducted every three years since 1986 and is coordinated through central banks and other public authorities.
The April 2022 survey collected information from more than 1,200 banks and dealers in 52 jurisdictions. Average daily OTC foreign-exchange turnover was reported at $7.5 trillion, compared with $6.6 trillion in the 2019 survey.
Foreign-exchange swaps represented 51% of total turnover, spot transactions 28%, outright forwards 15%, options 4% and currency swaps 2%. The United States dollar was on one side of 88% of all reported trades.
The survey provides breakdowns by instrument, currency, counterparty and reporting location. Its figures measure turnover reported by dealers’ sales desks and are intended to describe the size and structure of the market rather than to forecast exchange-rate movements.
