A season is a recurring division of the year associated with changes in daylight, temperature, rainfall, and biological activity. Seasons result primarily from the tilt of Earth's rotational axis as Earth travels around the Sun.

When a hemisphere is tilted toward the Sun, it receives longer days and more direct sunlight, producing warmer conditions. Six months later the same hemisphere is tilted away, resulting in shorter days and less intense sunlight.

Temperate regions are commonly described using spring, summer, autumn, and winter, while tropical climates may be organised into wet and dry seasons. Agricultural, ecological, cultural, and meteorological definitions may use different start dates.

Seasonal cycles regulate flowering, migration, breeding, dormancy, snow cover, river flow, storms, monsoons, and human activities. Oceans, elevation, latitude, land cover, and atmospheric circulation modify the local expression of the seasons.
