Environmental geography studies the spatial relationships between people, environments, and natural processes. It connects physical geography with human geography by examining how societies use, alter, understand, and respond to environmental systems.
Topics include climate, landforms, water, soils, ecosystems, hazards, resources, pollution, conservation, and land use. The field also considers how environmental change affects different communities and how political and economic systems shape environmental outcomes.
Climate and weather are central because they influence settlement, agriculture, transport, hazards, ecosystems, and resource availability. Environmental geographers study both short-term events and longer cycles such as droughts, monsoons, glaciations, and climate oscillations.
Methods include mapping, geographic information systems, remote sensing, fieldwork, historical analysis, statistics, and modelling. Environmental geography often contributes to planning, risk reduction, sustainability, and environmental policy.
