The proposed 1,500-year climate cycle is a hypothesis that North Atlantic and wider climate records contain recurring variations with a period near 1,500 years. The idea developed from patterns observed in ice cores and marine sediments.
Some abrupt cold events during the last glacial period, often associated with Dansgaard–Oeschger events, appear to have repeated at intervals that were sometimes close to this timescale. Comparable regularity is less clear during the Holocene and in records from other regions.
Suggested mechanisms have included changes in ocean circulation, interactions among ice sheets and oceans, solar variability, and internal climate dynamics. No single mechanism has been established that produces a stable global 1,500-year cycle.
Researchers debate whether the apparent spacing represents a true periodic process, a broad preferred timescale, irregular events, or statistical pattern selection. The hypothesis therefore provides an example of the need for careful dating, uncertainty analysis, spectral testing, and comparison among independent records.
