Plants use endogenous circadian systems to organise biological processes across the day. These rhythms persist under constant environmental conditions and can be synchronised by signals such as light and temperature.
Circadian timing influences photosynthesis, growth, metabolism, leaf movement and flowering. The coordination of these processes with predictable daily environmental changes can affect plant performance.
The plant circadian system consists of interacting regulatory components and feedback relationships. These molecular networks connect environmental inputs with rhythmic gene expression and physiological outputs.
Natural variation in circadian period has been observed among Arabidopsis accessions. Differences in clock behaviour are associated with geographic origin, environmental conditions and traits such as biomass accumulation and flowering time.
