Hurst (James Marsden Hurst, 1924–2005)</strong> was an American aerospace engineer who, in the 1960s, brought a genuinely scientific/engineering approach to market cycles — using early mainframe computers and signal-processing techniques (the kind of tools used for radar and telemetry) to analyze decades of price data, rather than relying on chart-reading intuition. His 1970 book <em>The Profit Magic of Stock Transaction Timing</em> introduced his cyclic theory to a wide audience, and his later, more technical <em>Cyclitec Cycles Course</em> laid out the full method: markets are composed of multiple overlapping cycles of different lengths and amplitudes, nested inside each other (a "harmonic" relationship in the loose sense — smaller cycles nested within larger ones), which can be isolated using channel and envelope analysis. Hurst claimed a 90% success rate using these techniques in a real-time 13-week trading experiment. Widely called the "father of modern cyclic analysis," Hurst's work is more rigorous and quantitative than Gann's or Elliott's, closer in spirit to Dewey's approach applied specifically to markets.
