Getting Started in Analysis and Porjections

Postby Blair » 12 Aug 2010, 16:45

Posting here to help get a discussion started on doing an analysis.

I have viewed 3 of the 4 tutorials and will view the 4th soon.

I am trying to learn enough to build a analysis on several cycles (probably 2-4). Then I would like to get a Moving average and build a projection for the cycles.

This should be a multi-step process.
Part 1: Do the Cycles Analysis
Part 2: Review the Analysis to determine the appropriate cycles I want to work with
Part 3: Build a Moving Average
Part 4: Build the Cycles Projection
Part 5: Add the Average and Cycle Projections together and Plot it.

Will post here the steps and progression.

Any experienced CATS analysts help is greatly appreciated.

Blair,
Ray Tomes is perhaps the best person to answer this. He is away right now but he will be back in less the 30 days.

Forgive my simple question - when i try and rename a CSV file to CATS it does not change it - it changes the name but the file extension stays as CSV. Can anyone make any suggestions on what i may be doing wrong.

Hi perigee2010,
Can you provide the file name that you are trying to change and the name you tried to change it to (please provide the extension [.xxx] in both cases.
Thank you

Thanks for the response

The first file I named 17-sp500.csv

then I tried to change the name to 17-sp500.cats

I set up the csv file with the appropriate coding at the top of the data as per Video3

One thing to add to above post - i noted that the dateformat i saved the csv file in kept being changed from yyyy-mm-dd to dd-mm-yyyy - that perhaps could be the issue?

David - Thanks, but I am working through it myself and wanted to give new users a space to reference.

I have reviewed the 4th video and it has helped. I am building my own steps, with careful documentation, and will be able to post a complete list with descriptions when I get it working.

I hope to shortly post the initial steps to help new users get started.

That's great, Blair. I'm glad the videos were helpful. If you have any questions as you develop use of the program do let us know. - David

David

That being the case (i.e. can't change extension from csv to cats) then i have obvioulsy missed a step in Video3 because unless I am mistaken that is exactly what Ray T does - simply renames a file in csv format to cats and it changes. In the manual i have seen that perhaps a program called Perls which has been included needs to be used but on a search it appears that some sort of programming skill is reqired. No doubt there is a simple solution - i am simply after weekly data on sp500 in cats format if anyone can help.

perigee,

You might want to do the renaming through the windows explorer, not your spreadsheet program. (I am not sure how you are doing it, but doing it directly from windows explorer forces it to happen)

Also, you might want to download a "True" text editor (search for notepad++). It is different that the windows notepad program. There are lots of other "true" text editors out there.

The date format could be a big issue. I have only worked with daily data, so not sure how the weekly formatting of the date should be for CATS.

Hope these are helpful.
