Spreadsheet processing of Planetary motions

Postby RayTomes » 11 May 2011, 05:56

I was asked in an email:
I am interested in software (preferably) or even spreadsheets that would allow me to easily calculate astronomical synodic cycles. I made my own spreadsheet linked to the swiss ephemeris but it is not giving me correct values and I have lost enough hair trying to figure it out. I downloaded the free cycle software from cyclessi and ran through the intro pdf but dont remember seeing any reference to asto function...I would appreciate any advice or recommendations towards software/spreadsheets that would get the job done.

My reply:
CATS has the capability of doing this, but only once the ephemeris files have been converted to CATS format which has not been done yet.

I suggest downloading ephemeris files from the HORIZONS site: http://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/horizons.cgi
You can set the interval to whatever you want (1 day, 1 month, 15 minutes etc) and get CSV files output for you over the time range that you want. These can be directly used with a spreadsheet.

This may be of use to other people also.
